What is price action trading?

Price action trading means making trading decisions by reading the raw movement of price on a chart — the candles, the highs and lows, the speed of moves — instead of relying primarily on indicators like RSI or MACD.

Why traders use it

Price action works on any market and any timeframe because it has zero lag. Indicators are calculated from price, so they always trail behind it. Price action shows you what buyers and sellers are doing right now, in real time.

Every indicator is just a different way of looking at price history. Price action is looking at the source directly.

The core idea

Price reflects everything currently known about an asset — every piece of news, every order, every emotion in the market. When you study how price approaches a level, how fast it moves, and how it reacts, you are reading the direct behavior of buyers and sellers.

A simple example

Imagine price approaching a previous high (shown in the diagram above as the dashed resistance line). A price action trader watches how price behaves there:

  • A sharp rejection with a long wick suggests sellers stepped in hard
  • A slow grind through the level suggests buyers are in control
  • A small pullback followed by a strong push through suggests the level was just absorbed, not respected

None of this requires an indicator — it requires reading the candles themselves.

How this differs from indicator-based trading

Indicator traders wait for a signal to fire (like a moving average cross or RSI crossing 30). Price action traders make decisions directly from what price is doing, often using indicators only as confirmation rather than the primary signal.

Why this matters for everything else you'll learn

Every concept in this curriculum — support and resistance, market structure, supply and demand, liquidity, order blocks — is really just a deeper layer of price action. You cannot skip this foundation. If you understand this lesson well, every lesson after it will make significantly more sense.

Key takeaways

  • Price action means reading raw price movement instead of relying primarily on indicators
  • It has zero lag because indicators are calculated from price, not the other way around
  • How price behaves at a level (rejection, grind, absorption) tells you who is in control
  • Every advanced concept in this curriculum builds directly on price action fundamentals
